Posted: 9:48 AM EDT on July 08, 2009
It's an El Niño year, which typically means that Atlantic hurricane activity will be reduced. But not all El Niño events are created equal when it comes to their impact on Atlantic hurricane activity. Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, July 10, 2009.
The remnants of Tropical Storm Blanca continue tracking west-northwestward away from Mexico on Friday. This is expected to continue bringing periods of heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous surf to the region, but landfall is not anticipated with this system.
Meanwhile, a tropical wave will extend over southwestern Mexico and push moist conditions onshore. This will trigger moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms over south-central Mexico and Guatemala, with widespread showers extending well northward into Guadalajara and Mexico City as well as up the Yucatan Peninsula. To the south, onshore flow from the Caribbean Sea over Central America will allow for wet weather to extend along the eastern coasts of Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Heaviest rainfall is anticipated over Costa Rica and western Panama. Jumping over the Caribbean, the Greater and Lesser Antilles will see pleasant weather on Friday with usual scattered showers developing in the afternoon. In the north, a front lingering over the Southeastern US will continue kicking up scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Bahamas and Gulf states.
In South America, a tropical wave approaching Guyana from the east will kick up wet weather which will track westward over the northeastern countries. In the northwest, also expect wet weather to persist over the region with moderate to heavy storms developing over Colombia. To the south, a strong front will dominate the weather over Paraguay and southern Brazil as it continues producing moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. Sao Paulo will see another day of rainy weather with highs in the lower 70s(F)/ lower 20s(C).
Further south, a low pressure system will advance eastward over southern Chile and Argentina. This strong system will trigger heavy precipitation over the southern tip of the continent with snow at high elevations, while it will also create a front that will kick up showers over central Chile and Argentina. Expect cool conditions in Santiago with highs in the upper 50s(F)/ mid-teens(C).
