Ida takes aim at the U.S. Gulf Coast

Hurricane Ida burst into the Gulf of Mexico as a Category 2 hurricane with 100 mph winds this afternoon, and is poised to deliver a solid blow to the U.S. Gulf Coast between Southeast Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle on Tuesday morning. Read This Blog Entry

Weather Underground Forecast for Monday, November 09, 2009.

The Caribbean will see unsettled weather on Monday as tropical storm activity returns to the region. Tropical Storm Ida will strengthen as it continues tracking through the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. On Monday, this system may increase to category 1 strength with winds between 74-95 mph and periods of intense downpours. Moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms will persist over the Yucatan Peninsula and Cuba. Meanwhile, another area of low pressure lingering just offshore of southwestern Mexico will continue spreading moisture over southern Mexico and Guatemala. Thus, wet weather is expected over most of Mexico and Central America. To the east, a tropical wave will continue tracking westward through the Caribbean Sea. This will bring moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorm to the Lesser Antilles in the morning, and will pick up additional moisture throughout the day and trigger thunderstorm development over Panama by evening.

WEATHER FACT: A large storm, dubbed the "Freshwater Fury", caused eight large ore carriers on the Great Lakes to sink on this date in 1913. Nearly 270 sailors on the ships perished. The storm also brought large snow amounts to the area, including 36 inches of snow at Pickens, WV.
