Record storm surges have caused major flooding along the North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware coasts over the past 24 hours, thanks to the powerful winds of a slow-moving Nor'easter energized by the remains of Hurricane Ida. Weather Underground Forecast for Monday, November 16, 2009. A fairly active weather pattern will persist through the eastern portion of the continent on Monday. A very broad trough of low pressure will encompass much of the area, pulling very cold air southward from Siberia. This cold air will dampen daytime high temperatures as far south as southeast China and east well into Japan.
An abundance of moisture will accompany this trough as a low pressure system tracks through southeast China. This moisture will instigate widespread precipitation north of Vietnam through Shanghai. Some of this precipitation will be in the form of snow, especially in inland China.
As the day progresses, the heaviest precipitation will progress northeastward into the East China Sea towards southern Japan. Kyshu will experience precipitation late in the day.
Farther to the north, dry conditions will prevail in Beijing and North Korea, but frigid air will keep conditions very cold.
Tokyo will rise into the upper 50s(F)/mid-10s(C), while Shanghai will see temperatures in the lower 50s(F)/lower 10s(C). Seoul will rise into the upper 30s(F)/lower 0s(C).
For Australia, a small low pressure system will slide across Tasmania and into the Tasman Sea. There will not be a tremendous amount of moisture associated with this system, thus only a quick shot of precipitation will fall over the island as it moves eastward.
Aside from some scattered showers in the western portion of the country due to a cold front, the rest of the country will remain dry.
Warm conditions are anticipated for much of the northern portion of the country.
Sydney will rise into the upper 80s(F)/lower 30s(C), while Melbourne will see temperatures in the lower 80s(F)/upper 20s(C). Brisbane will rise into the mid-80s(F)/upper 20s(C).
On this date in 1988, two F2 tornadoes ripped through central Arkansas, knocking out power to many people. One of the tornadoes hit a high school gym in Van Buren County. Fortunately, the gym was deserted because the basketball team was at an away game.
