The National Weather Service in Newport has issued a

* Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams in...
Onslow County in eastern North Carolina...
this includes the cities of... Pumpkin Center... Piney Green... New
River air station... Jacksonville... Half Moon... Camp Lejeune main
gate... Swansboro...

* until 415 am EST Thursday

* at 1011 PM EST... Doppler radar indicated a band of heavy rain
spreading over eastern Onslow County... producing rainfall amounts up
to 1 inch per hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches are
likely for areas east of Jacksonville overnight... producing flooding
of some roadways. West of Jacksonville... another 1 to 2 inches will
be possible with a continued threat of minor flooding. Onslow County
emergency communications reported that several roads south and
southwest of Jacksonville remained closed due to flooding.

This new warning has been issued to include eastern parts of the
County near Jones and Carteret counties.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However... all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... highways and underpasses. Additionally... country
roads and farmlands along the banks of creeks... streams and other low
lying areas are subject to flooding.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.

The Flood Watch is now in effect for

* a portion of eastern North Carolina... including the following
areas... Beaufort... Carteret... Craven... Duplin... Greene...
Jones... Lenoir... Martin... Onslow... Pamlico and Pitt.

* Through late tonight

* widespread rain will continue tonight as low pressure moves
slowly northeast along the coast. Additional rainfall amounts
will range from 2 inches southwest to 4 inches closer to the
coast. This will lead to significant runoff... with flooding of
low lying and poor drainage areas possible.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
